PHILOSOPHY OF FOOTBALL AT
OLATHE NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL
Our football program serves two functions to benefit participants:
1. It will be fun
2. It will help players grow towards responsible manhood.
In football, winning always contributes greatly to the amount of enjoyment derived from the game. Players who learn how to prepare themselves to win in this highly competitive sport have learned much in terms of group unity, discipline, courage, and work ethic. Life is competition! The real world is full of winners and losers. With this, we will strive to foster the winning edge essential to survive the game of life!
COMPETITION LEVEL EMPHASIS
SOPHOMORE – This is to be a formative year of learning the base fundamentals of the game and of our program. With our sophomore schedule, we place a great amount of importance on playing time. We want to win every game we play, but also place emphasis on team building and hard work. Between one’s sophomore and senior years, young men go through a considerable amount of physical change. With this in mind, we will work to develop position specific skills, but we will emphasize fundamentals and building a “tough” football player as opposed to developing a great sophomore quarterback. Although some sophomores will suit up for the varsity game and/or play junior varsity games, many may only play sophomore football. This lends itself as a year to develop class identity as great senior classes are established during their sophomore year. As a rule, sophomore games are played on Thursday’s before the varsity game.
JUNIOR VARSITY – This level will be used strictly as a playing time for those juniors and sophomores not ready to start on Friday nights. The emphasis will be training for varsity competition first and then to win games. Again, the purpose is to increase opportunities for players to learn, and they can only truly learn through competition. Again, JV is reserved mostly for juniors who do not play varsity, and then several sophomores will fill in any position needs. All junior varsity games are played following the varsity game [mostly Saturday mornings].
VARSITY – Win! Emphasis here is to play at the highest level of competition possible to win games and championships! Although we are committed to our seniors, we will always put the best players on the field on Friday nights, no matter what grade level they are. As a rule, varsity games will be played on Friday nights [occasionally Thursday nights or Saturday mornings when there is a stadium conflict].
